Copying sections to future terms

Last updated: May 6, 2026

Save time at the start of a new term by copying existing sections — including their course, name, and teacher — into a future term instead of creating them from scratch. Copied sections arrive empty, ready for new student enrollments.

Who can do this

Only administrators can copy sections to future terms. The feature is available from the All sections table view on the Sections page.

How to copy sections to a future term

  1. Click Sections in the sidebar navigation.
  2. In the top-right of the page, click the All sections icon (the building icon) to switch to the table view. Sections page with the All Sections toggle highlighted
  3. In the table, check the box next to each section you want to copy. You can also use the checkbox in the column header to select all visible sections, or use filters to narrow the list first. All sections table view with checkboxes
  4. Once at least one section is selected, a toolbar appears at the top of the table. Click Copy to future terms. Bulk action toolbar with Copy to future terms button
  5. In the dialog that opens, click the Target terms dropdown and select one or more future terms. Copy sections dialog with target terms dropdown open
  6. Review the summary — Scout shows how many new sections will be created and how many terms they will span. Copy sections dialog with a term selected and summary shown
  7. Click Copy to [N] term(s) to confirm. Scout creates the new sections and returns you to the table.

What gets copied

  • Course name and section name
  • Section identifier
  • Assigned teacher

Student enrollments are not copied. Each new section starts empty so you can enroll students fresh for the upcoming term.

Tips

  • You can select up to 10 sections at a time. If you need to copy more, run the action in batches.
  • You can copy to multiple terms at once. Select more than one term in the dropdown — Scout creates a separate copy for each term selected.
  • Duplicate sections are skipped. If a section is already associated with every term you select, Scout skips that section and tells you how many were skipped when the operation completes.
  • Only future terms appear in the dropdown. Terms that have already started or ended are not shown.
  • No future terms available? An administrator will need to create the upcoming terms in District Settings before you can use this feature.
