Linking submission documents to assignments in a learning period
Last updated: May 9, 2026
Scout lets staff upload proof-of-work documents directly to a student's assignment in a learning period — and students or parents can do the same from the Scout mobile app. Attached files appear right alongside the assignment record, making it easy to keep evidence organized without hunting through separate folders.
Uploading a submission from the web (staff)
You can attach a file to any school-created assignment directly from the Assignments tab of a learning period.
- Go to Learning periods in the left navigation and open the learning period you want to work in.
- Click the Assignments tab at the top of the page.
- Click a student row to expand their assignments, then select the course tab you want.
- Expand an assignment group, then find the specific assignment you want to attach a file to.
- In the Submitted column, click Upload.
- In the dialog that opens, drag and drop a file onto the upload area, or click to browse your computer. Supported formats: PDF, PNG, JPG, WEBP, MP4 (up to 100 MB per file).
- Optionally enter a Title — if you leave this blank, Scout uses the file name.
- Click Upload to save.
Once uploaded, the submission appears in the Submitted column as a clickable link. You can open it to preview the file, add another file to the same assignment, or unlink (remove) a submission if it was attached by mistake.
Uploading a submission from the mobile app (students and parents)
Students and parents can submit work directly from the Scout mobile app using their phone's camera or photo library.
- Open the Scout app and tap the Assignments tab at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the learning period pill at the top, then choose the course tab for the assignment.
- Find the assignment you want to submit work for and tap Upload.
- In the drawer that slides up, choose one of the following:
- Scan submission — use the camera to scan a physical document. Multiple pages are supported.
- Choose from photos — select one or more images from the device's photo library.
- Optionally enter a Display name for the file.
- Tap Upload (or Upload N pages for a multi-page scan) to submit.
Submitted files appear under the assignment card. Tap the submission count to expand the list and view or delete individual submissions.
Tips
- Which assignments show an Upload button? The upload option appears on assignments created directly in Scout (not pulled in from Canvas, Edgenuity, or other curriculum platforms). Assignments from third-party platforms track completion automatically, so manual file upload does not apply to them.
- File size limit: Files must be 100 MB or smaller. If a scan is too large, try reducing the number of pages or lowering the resolution before uploading.
- Who can upload? Staff can upload from the web. Students and parents can upload from the mobile app. Staff can view all submissions; students and parents can only see their own.
- Removing a submission: Staff can unlink a submission from the web at any time. Students and parents can delete their own submissions from the mobile app.
