How to Bulk Assign Assignments

Last updated: May 11, 2026

Bulk Assign lets you quickly assign curriculum items, standards-based assignments, or a brand-new custom assignment to multiple students or entire classes at once — all from a single step in a learning period.

How to bulk assign

Step 1: Navigate to the Learning Period

  1. Log into Scout and go to the Learning Period you want to work in.

  2. Click the Assignments tab.

Step 2: Switch to Bulk Assign mode

  1. Click the Bulk assign button near the top of the Assignments tab.

  2. The view changes to show your students and their courses with checkboxes.

Step 3: Select students or courses

You have several ways to pick which students and courses receive the assignment:

  • Select all at once — Check the Select all courses (all students) checkbox at the top of the list to include every student and every course in one click.

  • Select by student — Check the checkbox next to a student's name to select all courses for just that student.

  • Select individual courses — Click the checkbox next to a specific course under a student to pick exactly the pairings you want.

  • Assign one course to all students — Use the Assign to all students taking… dropdown to pick a course, and Scout selects it automatically for every enrolled student.

Use the Clear all button to remove all selections and start over.

Once you have at least one selection, a button appears at the top showing how many courses and students are selected. Click it to open the bulk assign dialog.

Step 4: Choose an assignment method

The bulk assign dialog has three tabs. Pick the one that fits your needs.

Curriculum tab

  1. Search for or select a curriculum from the list.

  2. Scout shows assignments grouped by week or topic. Use the checkboxes to pick individual assignments, select an entire group at once, or use Select all for everything.

  3. Use the search bar to filter by assignment name.

  4. Optionally, check Also assign to future LPs to apply the same assignments to upcoming learning periods in the same term.

  5. Click Create assignments to confirm.

Standards tab

  1. Search for and select one or more academic standards.

  2. Scout creates a gradeable assignment for each selected standard across all chosen students.

  3. Click Assign to confirm.

New assignment tab

Use this tab to create a brand-new, one-off assignment and send it to every selected student at once — no curriculum needed.

  1. Enter an Assignment name (required).

  2. Optionally add a Description with instructions or resources.

  3. Choose the Assignment type: Graded or Objective. (Objective assignments don't require a submission or grade.)

  4. Set a Due date (defaults to the end of the learning period).

  5. Expand Additional options to set the grade scale, expected effort in minutes, or maximum grade.

  6. Click Create assignments to add the new assignment to every selected student simultaneously.

Enable the Create more toggle in the dialog footer before saving to keep the dialog open after the assignments are created — useful when you want to add several different assignments back-to-back without re-entering bulk assign mode.

What happens next

Once confirmed:

  • The assignments are added to each selected student's assignment list for that learning period.

  • Teachers and students will see them immediately in their dashboards.
